Work from Home: A Boon or a Bane?

Dawn with a meeting in your pajamas’, practicing some yoga at lunchtime, and spending more time with your family in the evenings: the reality of most people’s work-from-home experiences has little in common with this idealistic and perhaps clichéd picture.

After 27 months of the epidemic, studies and surveys provide a more nuanced picture of the psychological and physical effects of telecommuting.

One thing is certain: the epidemic has boosted the popularity of working from home in several parts of the world.

Although figures have now reduced in places where vaccination rates have increased and infection rates have decreased, they are still much higher than they were before the epidemic.

There are many aspects to the factors of WFH. Let’s see if it is efficient to implement.

Factor #1

Economical Benefits

Travel is the most expensive aspect of not working remotely. It is estimated that 20% of a typical employee’s wage is spent on commuting to work. Half-time workers who work from home can save roughly $5,000 per month. Fuel, maintenance, transportation, a professional outfit, out-of-pocket lunches, and other expenses can all be cut or eliminated totally. These modest amounts build up to more cash in your wallet.

The savings benefit more than just employees. Companies that allow workers to work remotely after a pandemic, such as Twitter, Square, Shopify, and Facebook, to mention a few, will experience considerable long-term cost reductions.

Factor #2

Risk to productivity

Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, said,

“Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual.”

It is obvious that man cannot survive or function effectively and successfully on his own. While some employees are ecstatic at the prospect of working alone without the distractions of the office, others may find it challenging. Working long hours and interacting with remote team members with only a computer screen and no face-to-face connection and conversation can be difficult. Employees can connect via video calls and conferences using platforms like as Zoom, Skype, and others. To operate effectively, it may not be as efficient as sitting together and brainstorming ideas.

Working remotely, it is claimed, leads to higher productivity. However, with all of the alluring distractions such as:

  • Lack of community and teamwork
  • Lack of Motivation
  • Unmonitored performance and those frequent breaks
  • Lack of Office Equipment and Security Concerns
  • Distractions and lack of a good working environment
  • Employee Burnout
  • Naps in the middle of the day
  • The web series that ended on a cliffhanger
  • Spending time with relatives

It’s difficult to stay focused and interested in work for long periods of time. Additionally, working remotely can make one feel alone and unmotivated to produce results. As a result of the above-mentioned disadvantages, working from home may result in a drop in productivity.

Productivity is the foundation of any business. It is entirely reliant on three factors: teamwork, communication, and management. The only thing that makes impossible tasks doable is teamwork. However, communication is the most vital aspect of teamwork. In WFH, total communication is difficult to obtain. As a result, it is apparent that productivity in working from home is lacking. All of this, though, maybe enhanced through management. Management is primarily concerned with communication and teamwork. The results are attainable if management is done appropriately.

Factor #3

CULTURE and MINDSET

Employees can work from home – WFH home assists people in nuclear and joint families in planning activities that contribute to the household. Taking advantage of lunchtime to run errands or care for an elderly parent becomes much more feasible. This flexibility is provided by remote working because the nature of the work to be done is not questioned.

Building an office culture can be difficult because employees physically ingrain a firm’s culture and beliefs. Osmosis plays a critical role in accomplishing this. Management trainees and junior employees lose the benefit of learning from older employees when they work remotely. Inductions and immersions become a series of modules rather than being naturally supported by my day-to-day encounters.

People who have been working from home may have forgotten about office culture. It’s likely that those people’s perceptions of the office, as well as their adherence to rules and regulations and disciplined habits, have faded. One of the most important aspects of productivity is the workplace culture. People’s mindsets have shifted as a result of the culture they have absorbed at home. It’s as if they’ve stopped thinking about anything other than work and are simply enjoying the benefits of being at home. After acquiring remote work, the growth has come to a halt.

Factor #4

Ergonomic Issues

At home, one is largely confined to a chair and, in certain cases, a computer. This could imply prolonged sitting, which can have a variety of negative effects on one’s health, including back difficulties, muscle atrophy, and strain on the neck and eyes. Sitting, as they say, is the new smoking. The diet is also inconsistent, and most individuals admit that when they are restricted to their houses, they nibble a lot more. Fixed ‘lunch’ and ‘break’ hours are included in the official timetable. Perhaps the most significant cost is to one’s emotional health. Human beings require social interaction, and working in an office allows one to meet a large number of people, providing an outlet for one’s feelings as well as assistance with job-related issues.

Not everyone has the benefit of living in a detached home or a gated community with opportunities for exercise such as wandering around the property or on a terrace. Many well-off people have a gym or at the very least a treadmill at home. The normal middle-class person, on the other hand, would spend much of their time confined to a small flat. This would almost probably result in a significant reduction in his or her exercise levels. It is often suggested that everyone strive for 10,000 steps per day. If one could go for a walk in the morning, 5,000–6,000 steps may easily be accumulated.

When one is imprisoned to the four walls of one’s home, despair, worry, and tension are common. This can be mitigated to some extent by taking pauses, relaxing, engaging in a pastime, and practicing yoga, pranayama, and meditation. However, the impression of being “cooped up” persists, which can be aggravating in the long run. Working from home may appear to be a boon in the beginning, but it frequently turns out to be a curse in the end. Having said that, many people work from home successfully and successfully balance their job and personal lives. Even while working from home, it is up to the individual to look after his or her health.

The Bottom Line

In my opinion, the grass always appears to be greener on the other side. There is no such thing as a perfect system in this world. Everything has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and we must make the best of them. Some professionals prefer to work from home, while others yearn to return to their office, sit in their favorite office chair, and mingle with their coworkers.

Though the epidemic may have prompted many millions of employees around the world to work from home, it is far from the primary motivation to do so. Indeed, the benefits of working from home are so widespread on a global scale that it is destined to become the preferred option.

The difficulties that have been mentioned are reasons why some businesses are still wary of remote labor, and their concerns are valid. However, there are other methods of employee involvement that might assist businesses in overcoming these drawbacks.
